Meine Dame hat einen neuen Halbkreismantel!
So wunderschön mein Hamsterfell gefütterter „Fluffy“ auch ist, er ist sehr schwer, warm und der historische Beleg ist nicht ganz wasserdicht. Außerdem ist ein Mantel bekanntlich kein Mantel und ich brauchte unbedingt etwas schönes neues! 🙂
The Lady has a new semi-circular cloak!
As much as I love my hamsterfur-lined „Fluffy„, it is very heavy, warm and the historical accuracy is not optimal. Apart from that I simply wanted something chic and new 🙂
Statt Pelz habe ich mich diesmal für einen schweren Seidenköper als Futter entschieden. Das Obermaterial ist ein dichter sehr glatter Wollköper von Tuch und Stoff *
Beide Stoffe sind von der wunderbaren Katharina von Suderburg gefärbt worden, die mit einer -Zitat- „obszönen Menge Cochenille“ ein so unglaublich leuchtendes Pink hingekriegt hat, dass sie es „Marvollous Magenta“ getauft hat.
Die Seide ist mit Birke strahlend Gelb gefärbt und bildet einen mega Kontrast zu dem pinken Mantel!
Instead of fur, I decided for silk this time. The cloak is lined with a heavy silk twill and the outer material is a very sleek dense wool twill.
Both fabrics have been dyed by the wonderful Katharina von Suderburg, who used -quote unquote- „an obscene amount of cochenille“ to achieve this gorgeous hot pink colour that she very appropriately named „Marvellous Magenta“.
The silke is dyed with birch leaves to a very bright sunny yellow which maks a great contrast to the hot pink cloak!
Der Mantel sollte deutlich über bodenlang sein. Bei meiner Körpergröße von 1,76m ergibt das einen Radius von gut 1,80.
Die gerade Kante liegt auf den Schultern auf, was Länge frisst, darum ist der Mantel nicht ganz halbkreisförmig sondern etwas langgezogen. Ich habe ein Nesselmodell aus billigem Baumwollstoff an meiner Schneiderpuppe abgesteckt und das auf den eigentlichen Stoff übertragen.
I wanted the cloak to be significantly over floorlength. Me being about 1,76m (5 ft 9 inches) tall that meant, the coat’s radius had to be about 1,80m (5 ft 11-ish).
The straight edge that is laying on my shoulders loses some length on it’s way down to the floor due to the shape of the body. Therefore the coat is not perfectly half-circular but lenghtened a bit.
I made a mock-up out of cheap cotton and shaped it on my dressform before cutting it and transfering the pattern to the actual fabrics.
Die Webbreite reicht nicht aus, also habe ich die unterste Rundung angestückelt. Das ist durchaus historisch korrekt und die Naht verspielt sich im Fatenwurf auf dem Boden, das sieht man nicht, wenn man es nicht weiß.
The fabric was not wide enough to cut the coat out in one piece. So I patched the lowermost round edge. This is perfectly period and because that part of the fabric is pooling on the floor you can’t really see the seam.
In meinerm Fundus fand sich noch ein knallpinkes Wollgarn, das mal Teil eines Gastgeschenkes unserer lieben Freunde von der Cité d’Antan war. Gefärbt ist es von Atelier de Micky.*
Ich habe das Garn hälftig geteilt und es passte perfekt zum pinken Stoff!
Das Futter ist mit gelbem Seidengarn genäht. Auch aus meinem Fundus und chemisch gefärbt. Aber ich sag’s keinem, wenn ihr es nicht tut 😉
In my yarn stash I found some hot pink wool thread that was a perfect match for the fabric. I just had to split it in half.
The yarn has been part of a guest present gifted to us by our dear friends from the french Cité d’Antan and was dyed by Atelier de Micky
For the lining I used some yellow silk thread that I found in my stash as well. It is chemically dyed but I wan’t tell anyone if you don’t 😉
Oberstoff und Futter habe ich auf einandergelegt, minutiös abgesteckt, die Kanten gegeneinander nach innen gefaltet und mit dem pinken Garn zusammengenäht.
Leider trotz aller Vorsicht etwas verzogen, so dass ich ein gutes Stück wieder auftrennen, neu stecken und neu nähen musste. Man gönnt sich ja sonst nix ^^
I tried to precisely pin the outer fabric to the lining, folded the eged inward and sew it together. But I was not careful enough and ended up with a very crooked edge. So I had to undo quite a big part of the seam, repin and redo it.
Aber am Ende hatte ich meinen perfekten, superlangen, knallfarbenen Mantel!
Von Andy Vogel habe ich mir ein paar Tasselscheiben aus Messing dazu geleistet. Sie sind nachgearbeitet nach den Tasselscheiben an der Stifterfigur der Markgräfin Reglindis von Meißen am Naumburger Dom.
Was noch fehlt ist ein vernünftiges Tasselband. Ich bin mit einer Handwerkerin in Kontakt, die mir ein seidenes Band brettchenwebt. Übergangsweise hat der Mantel erst mal ein Stoffband bekommen.
But in the end I had my perfect, super long, super colourful coat! I got some brass fasteners from Andy Vogel. They are made after the statue of margravin Reglindis of Meissen on Naumburg Cathedral.
It still needs a good fastening strap, though. I am in contact with someone to have a silk band tabletwoven for me. Until then I used a strip of the fabrics used for the coat.
